Freeways and exits

• The Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway is 22 miles long. It opened to traffic on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, and runs between I-10 at the Loop 202 Santan Freeway in the East Valley and I-10 at 59th Avenue in the West Valley. ADOT describes it as an alternative to I-10 through downtown Phoenix. It has 15 interchanges.
• The South Mountain Freeway was the final piece of the Loop 101/202 system. It was ADOT's first highway public-private partnership, and Connect 202 Partners maintains it for 30 years. The 32nd Street interchange opened in October 2020.
• ADOT built the South Mountain Freeway in four segments: I-10 Papago (frontage roads along 59th Avenue and direct HOV ramps to I-10 east), Salt River (a double-roundabout interchange at Estrella Drive and two bridges over the Salt River), Center, and Pecos (an HOV ramp to the Loop 202 Santan Freeway). The half diverging diamond interchanges at Desert Foothills Parkway and 17th Avenue were the first in Arizona. In December 2019 the freeway was designated the Congressman Ed Pastor Freeway.
• ADOT describes the Loop 202 Santan Freeway as running between the US 60 interchange in Mesa and Loop 101 in Chandler, with Chandler crossroads including Dobson Road and Alma School Road.
• In Mesa, the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway runs between Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) and US 60 (Superstition Freeway). ADOT calls that direction of travel eastbound/southbound Loop 202.
• In east Mesa, US 60 has ramps to both northbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain) and southbound Loop 202 (Santan). ADOT places the eastbound US 60 ramp to northbound Loop 202 just west of Ellsworth Road.

• Mesa Gateway Airport, at 5835 S. Sossaman Road in Mesa, is within half a mile of Loop 202 and SR 24. It is a Foreign Trade Zone (#221) site. Its SkyBridge Arizona development offers space for air cargo and other aviation projects.
• A new six-mile Union Pacific rail extension runs just south of Mesa Gateway Airport. It serves manufacturers including CMC Steel, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and FUJIFILM.
• Mesa's Elliot Road Technology Corridor has access to Loop 202, US 60 and SR 24 and is about 5 minutes from Mesa Gateway Airport. The city lists Apple, Meta, Amazon, NTT, EdgeCore and Google among its large operators.
• Chandler's Price Corridor sits where Loop 101 and Loop 202 meet. It covers 5.7 square miles with about 7.4 million square feet of industrial and flex space. Intel is its largest employer.
• Chandler's Airpark Area, anchored by Chandler Municipal Airport, lies along the Loop 202 Santan Freeway with direct freeway access. It has about 6.3 million square feet of industrial and flex space and a focus on high-tech manufacturing.
• Mesa's Falcon District, anchored by Falcon Field Airport, has industrial space for manufacturing, maintenance, testing and logistics, and it connects to the region through Loop 202.

What local conditions do to trucks here

• ADOT is widening the Loop 202 Santan Freeway between Loop 101 and Val Vista Drive in Chandler and Gilbert. The work adds two lanes in each direction from Loop 101 to Gilbert Road and one lane in each direction from Gilbert Road to Val Vista Drive, and it also widens exit ramps and rebuilds bridges. Construction began in August 2024 and was expected to take about two and a half years.
• The City of Chandler lists 2027 as the completion date for the Santan widening. The project includes overnight freeway closures between Arizona Avenue and Price Road and narrowed ramps at the Loop 101 connection.
• The South Mountain Freeway has ramp meters. They are on the southbound entrance ramps at Van Buren Street and at Buckeye, Broadway and Baseline roads, and on the northbound ramps at Buckeye Road, Lower Buckeye Road and Southern Avenue.
